About us

1993 – HEDO has begun under social mobilization project of Center for Human Development (CHFD) in Kegalle which is facilitated by Norway Development Fund. While the government had been run a poverty elevating program called ‘Janasaviya Trust Fund (JTF)’ HEDO was a regional organization of CHFD.

ORIGINE OF HEDO
• In 1993, the government of Sri Lanka implemented Janasaviya Trust Fund (JTF) project with assistant from World Bank (WB) to address the rural poverty in whole country. The Centre for Human Development (CFHD) at Tholangamuwa responsible for the implementation of this project in Kegalle District.

• In 1994, JTF project was changed due to the government change and the new government introduced another program called "Samurdi". Various issues arisen in village level due to stopping the JTF program.

• Social Mobilization program implemented under the JTF program was very popular and it builds confidence among the rural community. In 1995, A Community Organization was set up with participation of community who has organized under the JTF project. Financial support and necessary instructions was given by the CFHD at Tholangamuwa, The managing director of HEDO was given the responsibilities to strengthen this organization as an independent organization. In 1996 this community organization reregistered as a "Human & Environment Development Organization (HEDO)".


POPULAR IN SRI LANKA

• In 1998, HEDO implemented "vermyculture for Rehabilitation of Barren Land" project with assistant from Community Environment Facility of Ministry of Environment. This project has selected among best 10 projects in Sri Lanka. Media highlighted this and HEDO is getting more demand.
• HEDO been granted an opportunity to promote vermy culture around the country by UNDP/ GEF

• Nepalian volunteer and 02 Norwegien Voulnteers worked with us under the South – South and North – South Exchange programme implemented by Friends of Lanka, funded by fredskorpset (FK) – Norway
• Two University students from England worked with us in the field of Micro Hydro. (2005-2006)
• Norwegian Volunteer visited to our organization to share the knowledge of organic farming in 2006.
